Holding Space

Updated: Aug 28, 2019

In yoga teacher training, we talk a lot about “holding space” for our students and leading yoga classes from the heart. Even before completing my 200hr YTT in the spring of 2019, I began teaching yoga. At first, I taught one class a week, then two and finally five classes a week and that felt like a good balance for me. I continued to sub for other studio teachers and felt honored to step into their classes and teach.

It’s been six months of teaching and I continue to grow with every class I teach. When I reflect back on “holding space” for my students, I often feel that the students hold space for me. We all have our stories and shared experiences but it is in this space that I am able to heal from the loss of my mom and reflect on the life she had given me. I am safe in this space with my thoughts and my breath. At the end of each class my students always thank me, which brings a smile to my face. It is my students who I want to thank, for their support of just being there at class. I still feel with each class and my own practice that yoga is everything I ever wanted and didn’t know I needed.
